House Approves Additional Immigration Reforms


Washington, D.C. – In addition to approving a resolution honoring the men and women of the U.S. Border Patrol, Representative Bud Cramer (Ala.-05) announced today that the House approved by voice vote legislation requiring the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to develop a plan to determine how the Border Patrol can better recruit and retain Border Patrol agents.

"Despite being understaffed with limited resources, the men and women of the Border Patrol continue to do an outstanding job protecting our borders," said Cramer.  "Today's legislation encourages the Homeland Security Department to recruit additional agents to help strengthen the security of our borders and prevent the flow of illegal immigration."

Today's bill, the More Border Patrol Agents Now Act, requires the Homeland Security Department to submit its plan for additional recruitment to Congress within six months of this bill's enactment.  The bill also permits the Department to offer recruitment bonuses to entice new hires and retention bonuses to prevent the loss of existing agents.

Immigration Act of 1990

Definition:
Public Law 101-649 (Act of November 29, 1990), which increased the limits on legal immigration to the United States, revised all grounds for exclusion and deportation, authorized temporary protected status to aliens of designated countries, revised and established new nonimmigrant admission categories, revised and extended the Visa Waiver Pilot Program, and revised naturalization authority and requirements

Amerasian Act

Definition:
Immigrant visas are issued to Amerasians under Public Law 100-202 (Act of 12/22/87), which provides for the admission of aliens born in Vietnam after January 1, 1962, and before January 1, 1976, if the alien was fathered by a U.S. citizen. Spouses, children, and parents or guardians may accompany the alien.

Foreign Government Official

Definition:
As a nonimmigrant class of admission, an alien coming temporarily to the United States who has been accredited by a foreign government to function as an ambassador, public minister, career diplomatic or consular officer, other accredited official, or an attendant, servant or personal employee of an accredited official, and all above aliens’ spouses and unmarried minor (or dependent) children.
